REUSE WATER BOTTLES

Reuse water bottles is another scam played on the bottled water market. Odd, that with all the evidence and facts that bottled water is destroying our environment; bottled water drinkers are greener as a demographic. Playing into that ignorance and denial is the idea that plastic bottles are environmentally sound because they are recyclable.

First, to reuse water bottles they have to be recycled and that is not happening on a large scale. Only 24% of bottled water gets recycled, leaving 66 million water bottles to go into landfills and litter TODAY. That is 30 billion water bottles a year that becomes trash after use.

Those plastic bottles that do get recycled can be turned into polar fleece or carpet. These are nice practical advances, but they do not become new water bottles. Meaning that they do not complete a cycle, the simply continue into another item for a time before then being discarded and added to landfill. Truly, almost every plastic item ever made is still inexistence. It takes 400-1000 years for plastic to completely break down and when it does, it is not environmentally friendly. Plastic bottles break down into very toxic components that leech into environment and ironically the water supply.

Even the reuse of water bottles without recycling has its dangers. Most single-use water bottles use polyethylene terephthalate or PET, which breaks down in sunlight and high temperatures. So, keeping and reusing a PET water bottle for long periods can be harmful. PET can emit more toxic emissions than glass at a rate of 100 times greater than glass.

There were even problems with reuse water bottles designed for reuse, like sports bottles or bike water bottles. Bisphenol A or BPA has been found to be harmful to some people who use plastic water containers, even baby bottles. The best bet for reuse of water bottles is to use a stainless steel water container.
