What Is Drop The Prop?
Drop the Prop is a website dedicated to getting the American people to drop pretention and forgo drinking bottled water. The basic idea is that the United States has some of the best and cleanest utility water systems (tap water) in the world. It is very affordable, highly maintained and regulated, and is readily available. Yet, too many Americans believe tap water is not worthy of them. While it is true that the bottled water industry does a lot of harm to the environment and the water supply, it is actually the perception of bottled water that feeds the bottled water industry. Meaning, the bottled water industry really does not do a lot of promotion of its bottled water that is misleading; what it does do is feed on people's desire to be elitist. The idea is that people do not drink bottled water because they truly believe tap water is dangerous, or bottled water tastes better, or any other excuses that people give for drinking bottled water; the real reason people keep drinking bottled water is so they can have people see them with a water bottle in their hands. It is cheap status symbol or prop. It is a prop that is trying to say- I am healthy, have discerning taste, am environmentally friendly, and I am intelligent. But as anyone thinks it through, none of this true and the truth comes forward that people drink bottled water only for pretentious reasons. Sadly, this billion-dollar industry is no fad and is leaving a wake of destruction behind. The Metaphysical ![]() So, it is sad and disrespectful that Americans believe that their tap water is dangerous or somehow substandard. It is disrespectful that they turn to bottled water as a cheap and accessible status symbol. The irony is the two largest brands of bottled water in America (Dasani and Aquafina) are simply processed tap water. In other words Americans are paying over a dollar a bottle for what the bottler is paying less than a penny for. And another layer of irony is any buyer of bottled water can buy the same water from the same source for the same price as the bottler. The Impact ![]() What Is to Be Done The first thing to be done is to drop the prop, stop carrying disposable bottled water for fashion's sake. That is not to say that there is never a place for prepackaged bottled water, but there are plenty of alternatives that the average person would not have no need of bottled water. One step that people can take is to start carrying their own water bottles. There are aluminum and steel water bottles that have minimal environmental impact. There are also long lasting polycarbonate water bottles, make sure they are BPA free, that because of their continual reuse will have much less of an impact on the world. These kind of water bottles are designed to be easy to carry and clean. Many come with accessories that will make them much nicer to use than prepackaged bottled water. Accessories like insulating covers which can keep water much cooler for much longer than disposable plastic. Another step is for people to stop purchasing bottled water to drink at home. There are many options for water purifiers can be used on or at the faucet if people are truly concerned with water quality. One could even install a reverse osmosis system, the same process water bottlers use. There are also water purifiers that operate in water pitchers. Some reusable water bottles even have water purifying built right into them. All these options make buying bottled water senseless. |
